Abstract

The article deals with some aspects of the pre-war international political crisis of 1939. The goals of British, French and US policy towards Germany and the evolution of their methods of influence on it to reach an agreement are revealed. It is shown what role the Western powers assigned to the Soviet Union in the implementation of their political goals, and the attitude of the Soviet leadership to the initiatives of London, Paris and Washington. The reaction of the German political leadership to the actions of the European powers and the United States is analyzed. With the involvement not previously introduced into scientific circulation German archival documents and recently declassified materials from the collections of the CIA the article shows the participation in the implementation of this policy the intelligence services of Germany and the USA. The names of some agents are given, information about their life path and activities is given, which in itself may be of interest to the reader. In the Appendix are published the texts of several of the messages received in Berlin from the agent of Switzerland, who vividly illustrate the evolution of the techniques of the "German policy" of the Western powers in the spring of 1939. The texts of these reports also indicate that England, France and the United States, despite the demonstrative violation of the Munich agreement of 1938 by Hitler's Germany, were ready to continue the policy of "appeasement" of the "Third Reich" in the hope of avoiding a military clash with it and accept as a fait accompli the new territorial seizures of Germany in Eastern Europe. The material of the article shows, among other things, that Hitler's Germany violated the agreement with its military and political ally-Italy to ban intelligence activities against each other. The author also tries to look at the" political cuisine "of Berlin, to determine what influence on decision-making could have "Ribbentrop Bureau".
