Abstract

The article addresses the problem of disputed Antarctic territories, the role of Argentina in establishing the legal status of Antarctica and the current activities of this country in the region. The work sets focus on the process of Argentina's expansion to the south in view of recent political events, as well as the compliance of the state's territorial initiatives with international agreements and international law. The diplomatic confrontation between Argentina and other countries interested in the division of Antarctica, such as Chile and Great Britain, is considered. The conclusion of the work gives an assessment of the significance of the events that took place in the summer and autumn of 2020 for the parties to the Antarctic Treaty. It is concluded that Argentina does not act in accordance with its obligations under the Antarctic Treaty, but uses the contradictions of the Treaty to achieve its own national interests.
