Abstract

The crisis of representativeness that Spain faced after the economic crisis led to political apathy of voters and the outflow of a significant part of the electorate of the two leading political parties in the country. Against this background, in the middle of the second decade of the current century, two new parties appeared, delaying 30% of all voters. In addition, as a result of the escalation of the Catalan crisis, regional parties in recent years have been gaining strength in favor of the secession of the region. These factors led to a significant increase in the fragmentation of the lower house of the Spanish parliament and, as a result, significantly complicated the political process, in some cases actually blocking it. Under the new conditions, 4 general parliamentary elections were held (2015, 2016, 2019, 2019), 2 of which were repeated because of the inability to form a cabinet. On the one hand, the expansion of party proposals has a beneficial effect on voters' perceptions, on the other, the reluctance, and in some cases, it is impossibility, of party leaders to seek compromise solutions entails serious political and economic consequences. It is also obvious that the institutional mechanisms adopted at the dawn of a democratic transition and functioning perfectly in the conditions of a two-party system for almost 40 years do not work in a multi-party system and require reform.
