Between an Oath Fealty and Treaty: Loyalty (Getruwe) Establishment in Order Prussia in the Mid-15th Century

The article examinises cases of the lemma trew* usage referring to the concept of “loyalty (Getruwe)” to determine its meaning beyond the oath in the context of political conflict. The cases are determinited in the published materials of recesses of Estate assemblies and correspondence in Order Prussia 1440—1466 (111 sources). The analysis shows the existence of three lines of communication on the “loyalty” issue: the Grand Master — representatives of the estates, the Grand Master — the officials of the Order, the Estates within. The considered cases allow us to draw a conclusion about the correaltion between loyalty and power — naming someone as “loyal” is an expression and demostration of power and authority. Loyalty establishment cannot be one-time action and requires constant confirmation through communicative procedures.
