Abstract

The article analyzes the information of Ibn al-Nadim, the Arab writer of the 10th century, about the correspondence of the caliph al-Ma'mun with a certain ruler of the state of Bulgarians (Bulgars) regarding the religion of Islam. Information is given about the activities of Ibn al-Nadim as a bibliographer and his work entitled “Fichrist”. The question of the reality of the news is raised, the points of view of researchers about a possible addressee are noted. Along the way, data on the writings of the Volga Bulgars are considered. The problem of Islamization of the Bulgarians of the steppes of Eastern Europe and the Bulgars on the Volga is touched upon. The author of the article offers a version of the unreliability of Ibn al-Nadim’s information about the correspondence between the Lord of the Bulgarians and the Caliph al-Ma’mun. Thus, Ibn al-Nadim showed his approval and favor towards the caliph al-Ma’mun.
