Abstract

The article is dedicated to the capture of Rome, the capital of the Papal States, by Italian troops.  The events of September 20, 1870 marked the end of a thousand-year theocratic monarchy headed by the Pontiff and became a major milestone in the History of Italy and the History of the Catholic Church. For decades, many historians portrayed the capture of Rome as the realisation of the dream, in comparison to which all difficulties seemed insignificant. Church historians focused on the elimination of the Pontiff’s temporal power. In the spirit of the current historiography of the Risorgimento, which pays significant attention to the emergence of contradictions and problems during the unification of Italy, the author of the article focuses on the challenges faced by the Italian government during the capture of Rome and immediately after it and systematizes them.
