Abstract

General Dmitry Sergeevich Levshin (1801—1871) was the third consul of Russia in the Principality of Serbia, after G. V. Vashchenko and G. I. Danilevsky. He held a diplomatic post in Belgrade from the summer of 1849 until the late fall of 1851. Political and diplomatic relations between Serbia and Russia in the 40s — 50s of the 19th century were characterized by mutual distrust. According to Serbian sources, Consul Levshin took a tough stance towards the Serbian government and especially towards the then pro-Western-oriented Ilia Garashanin. The article analyzes Levshin’s consulship in Belgrade on the basis of Serbian sources, mainly those preserved in the Serbian State Archives in Belgrade.
