Тайна апостольской могилы: усыпальница святого Петра между Средневековьем и Новым временем

Могила апостола Петра под Ватиканской базиликой была одной из самых известных и в то же время самых загадочных христианских святынь в Европе. Фактически объектом культа был участок земли, на котором последовательно возводились мемориальные сооружения и алтари, но это стало известно только после археологических раскопок, проведенных в 1940-х гг. В Средние века усыпальница Петра рассматривалась как запретная, неприкосновенная святыня. Сложившиеся вокруг нее предания включали среди прочего фиктивные сведения об особенностях ее устройства. В эпоху Возрождения в литургическом и церемониальном пространстве базилики, ставшей основным папским храмом, произошли перемены, которые еще больше осложнили доступ к святыне. По мере развития «папской монархии» базилику стали считать «престолом Петра», усыпальницу апостола — основанием церкви, а некоторые римские гуманисты воспринимали ее как сакральное сердце мироздания. Алтарь над могилой апостола стал центром нового храма св. Петра, но в ходе строительства среди членов папской курии стали высказываться сомнения в сохранности могилы. Наряду с благоговением перед святыней, соблюдением старинной традиции и значением гробницы в папской идеологии эти сомнения привели к тому, что усыпальница Петра окончательно превратилась в запретное священное место.
