Abstract

The article highlights the problem of the aggravation of the socio-political situation in Tajikistan immediately after it gained independence in 1991. After gaining sovereignty, Tajikistan was divided into two opposing political forces, disagreements between which led to a full-scale civil war in the country. The struggle between the official authorities and the United Tajik Opposition continued until mid-1997, until an agreement on peace and national accord in the country was signed. The article presents the difficulties that arose in the process of inter-Tajik negotiations and their results.
