Abstract

The article is devoted to the history of the embodiment of the literary topic about an owl pursued by birds in the visual sources of the 16—17th centuries. The story of the owl and the birds appeared in an ancient fable and was based on zoological observations and hunting practice. The fable condemned thoughtlessness and neglect of wise advice, and the owl could act as both a wise bird and an unreasonable one. The Renaissance fable borrowed the same topic from the ancient fable. However, due to the changed symbolism of Noctua and Bubo in Christianity, the topic under consideration was filled with more and more new meanings, which were visually embodied in emblematics, fine art and even cartography, where it was associated with the bestial symbolism of certain lands.
