The Duke Nicholas Maximilianovich Leuchtenberg and Creation of Russian State Geological Service

The publication is devoted to the organizational and scientific activities of a member of the imperial family, Duke Nikolai Maximilianovich Leuchtenberg, Prince Romanovsky, carried out within the framework of the traditional charitable and social activities of the imperial family — the development of geological science in Russia and the creation of the national state geological service. The publication examines the origin of the duke, position in the imperial family, education and upbringing, organizational and scientific activities of the Duke of Leuchtenberg on the post of President of the Imperial Mineralogical Society, the Duke's trip to the Urals, which resulted in the Duke's proposal to create a State Geological Service, the circumstances of the establishment of the Geological Committee in Russia, the Duke's activities in this direction.
