Abstract

This article analyzes different aspects of the patronage and social sponsorship’s role in the development of Russian medicine in the second half of the 18th and in the beginning of 19th century. The present study includes the scientific data concerning patrons and philanthropists’ aid for Russian medical education. This article also includes the overview on formation of Russian tradition of charity, patronage and social sponsorship during different periods of Russian history. The present study reveals the patronage’s influence on Russian hospital system from 1750s to 1820s. Authors of this article also explore the interaction between the patronage and the charity establishments founded by Russian monarchs in the second half of the 18th century and in the beginning of 19th century.
