In the Shadow of the Capitals: Frontier Castle Boroughs of the Al-Andalus

The article analyzes data from written and archaeological sources about two fortified urban settlements in the border lands of Al-Andalus - Vascos and Maǧrīt (modern Madrid), founded during the reign of Emir Muhammad I (855-886). These two settlements were located in the zone of the emergence of new Muslim towns in the 9th century, the so-called Middle Mark (al-Ṯaḡr al-Awsaṭ), which is actively studied in modern historiography of medieval urbanism. The study describes the dynamics of the development of a medieval castle borough. The significance of the history of border towns after the reconquest by Christians for our understanding of the Muslim period of their existence is also shown.
