Conflicts of values and prospects for the development of the Russian state

The Constitution of the Russian Federation was based on two potentially contradictory principles: democratic values and strong presidential power. In the 1990s, a convincing interpretation of this conflict was proposed. A strong presidential power, consistent with the historical traditions of Russia and the difficult conditions of the post-Soviet period, was seen as a necessary transitional measure, preparing the ground for the further development of democratic institutions. Recently, a new and dangerous trend has emerged in conservative circles. Human rights, separation of powers, Rule of Law, etc. They are considered as imports of Western values that are alien to the national political culture
