Abstract

This article celebrates the anniversary of publication by Velikhov, Zinchenko and Lectorsky who argued in 1988 for an interdisciplinary agenda in studying consciousness. At the beginning of article, a short overview of such research world-wide and across disciplines is given. Among main themes considered in more details are multilevel models of evolutionary cognitive-affective organization and studies directed towards discovery of brain mechanisms involved in sensory integration (akin the classical philosophical problem of “sensus communis”) and in processing of personal-sense-related information. In a separate part of the article, two heuristics are described used for an efficient search of Self-referential data and for a goal-directed control of overall brain multilevel architecture. The final part of the article is devoted to an overview of current and emerging technological applications of consciousness research in several important domains of praxis.

Keywordsconsciousness, personal sense, brain, Default Mode Network (DMN), evolution, lateralization, hippocampal formation, computational modeling
