Abstract

The article reflects on the intellectual heritage of the French philosopher of the first half of the 20th century, the chief editor of the journal Revue de métaphysique et de morale Xavier Léon, whose activities and works are just beginning to emerge from historical oblivion. On the basis of methodological principles of cultural-historical epistemology, the authors focus on the existential component of the formation of the scientific-philosophical journal, the philosophical community, the first World Philosophical Congress. The focus is on the correspondence of Xavier Léon and Élie Halévy, which plays an important role in the history of French thought of the first half of the 20th century (letters are stored in Sorbonne, in Victor Cousin’s library). The authors turn to the epistolary heritage (1891–1892) in order to demonstrate the existential field of professional philosophical communication, as well as the cultural, historical and social contexts that accompanied the release of the first issue Revue de métaphysique et de morale. The analysis of the archival materials of X. Léon and Élie Halévy makes it possible to reveal the existential and intellectual prerequisites of the formation not only of the journal itself, but also of the first World Philosophical Congress and the French Philosophical Society.
