Abstract

This article is devoted to the study of attempts to establish trade and diplomatic relations between Japan and Russia in the first half of the 19th century. Due to Japan's closed country policy, it remained largely unknown for a long time, but its territorial location aroused considerable interest in many areas, including trade. The colonial policy of European states and America in the 19th century was one of the key elements of the world order of that time. The attention of these countries was focused on the Pacific region in general, and on China and Japan in particular. This work examines attempts to establish trade and diplomatic relations with Japan, analyzes the reasons for the failures and misunderstandings that occurred during the missions of Adam Laxman, Nikolai Rezanov, and Vasily Golovnin. Based on official documents, the position of the parties is highlighted. The so-called “Golovnin incident”and its significance for Russian-Japanese relations are considered. Quotes from documents of the period under review and assessments of modern historians are provided. Particularly valuable are the testimonies of contemporaries of the events that took place and citations from “Edict to Repel Foreign Vessels” which contains important information about the attitude of the Japanese government of that time towards foreign citizens. The study pays special attention to the analysis of changes in public opinion of the Japanese people, the evolution of ideas about foreign countries and how the Japanese nobility responded to changes in political life in the first half of the 19th century.

1 В последние годы растёт политическое и экономическое влияние государств Азиатско-Тихоокеанского региона1. Япония, являющаяся одним из их представителей, играющая важную роль на мировой арене, неизменно привлекает к себе внимание мировых исследователей. Географическое соседство России и Японии исторически побуждало представителей обеих стран к неоднократным попыткам контактов и установлению официальных торговых и политических отношений на высочайшем уровне, однако данный процесс проходил не без осложнений. Предпосылки и причины этих осложнений являются одним из предметов данного исследования. Для лучшего понимания текущего состояния отношений между Россией и Японией важным является понимание исторической специфики взаимоотношений двух стран. Помимо этого, продолжающиеся дебаты о принадлежности островов Курильской гряды также повышают актуальность данного исследования. 1. Далее – АТР.
2 По истории Японии и проблемам российско-японских отношений издано значительное количество работ в России и за рубежом [Файнберг, 1960; Торкунов, 2015; Климов, 2020]. Кроме того, опубликованы сборники документов по истории двухсторонних отношений [Совместный сборник документов по истории территориального размежевания между Россией и Японией, 1992; Русские Курилы. История и современность…, 2015]. Нами, совместно с РГАВМФ, опубликованы документы, в которых морские офицеры оставили свои впечатления о Стране восходящего солнца [Российско-американская компания…, 2010]. Опубликованы указатели на труды по истокам и развитию японо-американских отношений в XIX в. [Japanese-American Relations: A List of Works in the New York Public Library, 1921]. При этом исследователи, как правило, рассматривают отдельно историю Японии и российско-японские отношения, а также подчас изолировано от общей ситуации на севере Тихого океана и попыток других держав установить отношения с этой страной.
3 В данной статье не ставится задача подробного изучения истории Японии и русско-японских отношений, но при этом мы попытаемся выделить основные вехи и наметить общую тенденцию в попытках России и других стран прорвать изоляцию Японии в первой половине XIX в. Мы акцентируем внимание на стремлении различных стран, в том числе России, взаимодействовать с Японией в контексте борьбы за колонии на севере Тихого океана. Особое внимание, на основании архивных источников, мы уделим периоду 1820–1840 гг. в русско-японских отношениях, который практически не освещался в специальной литературе.
4 ПРЕДЫСТОРИЯ РАЗВИТИЯ РОССИЙСКО-ЯПОНСКИХ ОТНОШЕНИЙ В XIX В.
5 Активное освоение севера Тихого океана колониальными державами неизменно сопровождалось стремлением включить в торговый оборот Японию, обладавшую среди закрытых для европейцев территорий одним из самых привлекательных рынков. При этом, в Японии я XVII в. продолжалась политика практически полной торговой и дипломатической изоляции.
