Abstract

The article examines four terracotta figurines depicting the ancient Egyptian god Bes and his female counterpart Beset, acquired by Vladimir S. Golenischev in Egypt and kept in the storages of the Department of the Ancient Orient at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. The analyzed objects are diverse in their topics, form and functional purposes, testifying to the great popularity of this ‘minor’ deity in Graeco-Roman Egypt; all objects are included in the context of domestic worship of the god Bes. They served as a “link” between temple festivals and domestic worship, and could also be placed in a burial place as grave goods or could be brought to a temple as votive offerings. Bes and Beset guarded and helped a person during periods when he faced the forces of chaos – in a time of sleeping, illness, in childbirth, during the war. Bes and Beset were considered the protectors of childhood and motherhood, promoting conception and successful childbirth. Bes was associated with the different borderline states of human health and the period of a person’s transition to another world. The images of Bes do not come from temple theology, but from the context of domestic, private rituals; Bes remains entirely a “popular” god, the part of a daily life cycle of the population of Graeco-Roman Egypt. These multifaced quality is one of the secrets of the incredible popularity of Bes, whose figurines spread along with the Greeks and Romans throughout the oecumene down to the Black Sea region.

1	В статье рассматриваются четыре терракотовых статуэтки с изображением Бэса или его женской ипостаси; они разнообразны по сюжетам, форме и функциональному назначению и свидетельствуют о большой популярности этого божества в греко-римском Египте. Статуэтка Бэса, несущего на плече наос, поднимает проблему бытования культа этого божества и его связи с другими богами, два светильника с изображением Бэсет подводят к теме женского дополнения Бэса. Все публикуемые памятники происходят из собрания В.С. Голенищева и находятся в запасниках Отдела Древнего Востока ГМИИ им. А.С. Пушкина.
2	КАТАЛОГ ТЕРРАКОТОВЫХ СТАТУЭТОК
3	1. Фрагмент статуэтки Бэса или фигурного сосуда в виде Бэса (илл. 1). Инв. № I, 1а 4245. Из собрания В.С. Голенищева (1911). Датировка: Римский период. Сохранность: сохранилось лишь лицо от двусторонней статуэтки или рельефного сосуда. Размеры: высота 8,9 см, ширина 4,2–6,4 см, толщина 0,4–0,9 см. Способ изготовления: оттиск в двусторонней форме; оттиск лицевой стороны отличного качества, с тонкой доработкой деталей. Материал: глина аллювиальная тонкая плотная коричневая (5YR4/2, 5YR4/3), с небольшим количеством золотистой слюды, редкими включениями растительных частиц. Способ отделки внешней поверхности: красно-коричневый ангоб (2.5YR4/6) на лицевой стороне, местами лощеный. Обжиг: равномерный окислительный. 4	2. Статуэтка Бэса с наосом и фигурой Афины, с отверстием для подвешивания в верхней части (илл. 2). Инв. № I, 1а 4269. Из собрания В.С. Голенищева (1911). Датировка: Птолемеевский период. Сохранность: нижняя часть статуэтки утрачена; сколы и потертости поверхности. Размеры: высота 11,2 см, ширина 2,8–4,8 см, толщина 1,0–2,3 см, диаметр отверстия для подвешивания 0,4 см. Способ изготовления: оттиск в двусторонней форме; соединительные швы по бокам подрезаны и заглажены; оттиск лицевой стороны хорошего качества; задняя сторона рельефная, оттиск слабо детализированный, с дополнительной доработкой деталей. Материал: глина аллювиальная тонкая плотная коричневая (5YR4/3), со средним количеством золотистой слюды, небольшой примесью растительных частиц. Способ отделки внешней поверхности: заглаживание; красно-коричневый ангоб (2.5YR4/4) на лицевой стороне. Обжиг: равномерный окислительный. Размеры: высота 17,1 см, ширина 3,9–7,5 см, толщина 2,0–5,0 см, диаметр отверстия для подвешивания 0,5–0,7 см. Способ изготовления: оттиск в двусторонней форме; соединительные швы по бокам подрезаны и заглажены; оттиск лицевой стороны среднего качества; задняя сторона простая, заглажена и подлощена; на задней стороне технологическое отверстие диаметром 1,0–1,1 см; низ статуэтки подрезан. Материал: глина аллювиальная средне-тонкая среднеплотная светло-красно-коричневая (2.5YR5/3, 2.5YR5/4), с большим количеством мелких растительных частиц, небольшой примесью золотистой слюды. Способ отделки внешней поверхности: заглаживание. Обжиг: равномерный окислительный. Примечание: у левой ноги два отверстия, возможно, для вставки фитиля. Публикации: [Ходжаш, 2004, с.102, кат. 72].
