FEATURES OF ARABIC SCRIPTS IN ALJAMIADO MANUSCRIPTS

Abstract

Reading aljamiado manuscripts (the Arabic script used for transcribing Spanish texts) is a challenge, especially for novice researchers. The rules of the scientific transliteration of aljamiado texts are available in many studies dedicated to the Arab-Spanish manuscripts, in the notes in particular. However, there are no textbooks that would contain, in a generalized form, typeface samples of Arabic letters typical of the naskh script in its Maghrebi writing style, found in the Arab-Spanish manuscripts. An exception is the anthology of aljamiado texts prepared by Pablo Gil (1888) for his Arabist students. In that textbook, however, the letters are handwritten and differ significantly from facsimiles. In books on Arabic calligraphy, we can often find facsimiles of letters, combinations of letters, and words, but there are no summary tables that could serve as a guide for analyzing manuscripts.

 

This article aims to provide a summary table of both standard and original typefaces found in Arab-Spanish manuscripts. It also sets out some basic rules of spelling for aljamiado texts and rules of transliteration of such texts in the Latin script. Unlike standard tables of transliteration of aljamiado texts, which lack some Arabic letters that are not found in aljamiado texts; this article presents variations of Arabic graphemes found in aljamiado manuscripts in Arabic quotes. In addition, the article presents a version of their transliteration into Spanish proposed by P. Gil. Also, we have clarified Gil's transliteration version. This article can be useful both for Arabists interested in aljamiado manuscripts, and specialists in Romance philology that research the history of the Spanish language.

3 Резюме: Чтение рукописей на алхамиадо (на испанском языке в арабской графике) представляет собой известную сложность, особенно для начинающих исследователей. Правила научной транслитерации текстов на алхамиадо изложены во многих исследованиях, посвященных арабо-испанским рукописям, в частности, в комментариях при публикации таких текстов. Однако не существует пособий, в которых в обобщенном виде были бы представлены образцы начертания арабских букв почерка насх в его магрибском варианте, встречающихся в арабо-испанских рукописях. Исключение составляет хрестоматия по алхамиадо Пабло Хиля (1888), подготовленная им для своих учеников-арабистов. Тем не менее, в этом пособии изображения букв сделаны от руки и значительно отличаются от факсимильных копий. В книгах, посвященных арабской каллиграфии, часто встречаются факсимиле отдельных букв, сочетаний и слов, но обыкновенно отсутствуют таблицы, которые могли бы служить ориентиром при разборе рукописей. Данная статья ставит практическую цель представить сводную таблицу как стандартных, так и оригинальных начертаний, встречающихся в арабо-испанских рукописях. В ней также изложены основные нормы орфографии текстов на алхамиадо и правила транслитерации таких текстов в латинской графике. В отличие от стандартных таблиц транслитерации текстов на алхамиадо, в которых отсутствует ряд арабских букв, не встречающихся в текстах на алхамиадо, в данной статье представлены и варианты арабских графем, встречающихся в рукописях на алхамиадо в цитатах на арабском, а также вариант их транслитерации на испанский, предложенный П. Хилем. Также вносятся некоторые уточнения в его вариант транслитерации. Данная работа может быть полезна как для арабистов, интересующихся рукописями на алхамиадо, так и для романистов, занимающихся историей испанского языка.
