Abstract

This paper investigates the infinitive and converb constructions with the verb ‘want’ in Tabasaran (Lezgic branch of the East Caucasian family). In these constructions agreement across clausal boundaries from infinitive and converb complement clauses is possible where a first or second person argument in the dependent clause can control agreement on the matrix finite verb. This study focuses on parameters that regulate the possibility of long-distance agreement in these constructions and shows that Tabasaran data cannot be accounted for by existing theoretical approaches to long-distance agreement.

KeywordsTabasaran, personal agreement, infinitive and converb constructions, long-distance agreement across clausal boundaries
