Abstract

This article tracks down the personal and professional life journey of a renowned Russian psychologist and historian of science, Mikhail Grigorievich Yaroshevsky (also spelled Iaroshevskii) (1915–2001), reconstructs the history of his pursuits in various research fields such as history and methodology of psychology, history of Soviet science, and social psychology of science. The author of numerous editions of “A History of Psychology”, Yaroshevsky is known for his original systemic approach towards the analysis of theoretical foundations of psychology, its “categorial framework”. The article depicts Yaroshevsky’s role in putting the historical record straight: exonerating the repressed and defamed scholars, creation of the “Repressed science” project that was an important milestone in the historical reflection of scholars in various fields of knowledge of the Russian history of science and humanities. Yaroshevsky’s contribution to social psychology of science, development of the program-role approach to the studies on scientific work, deserves special mentioning. An example of complex approach to the analysis of science is the project of historical psychology that Yaroshevsky was developing in the last years of his life. This project combined the history of scientific ideas with the studies on sociopsychological dynamics of scientific groups. He had also presented an argument in favor of the existence of a “special path”, a paradigm for behavior research that has formed in our country and was dramatically different from the behaviorist tradition.
