Abstract

This paper reviews the main parameters of dissertations on the history of technology, defended in the USSR from 1935 to 1991. This data gives an idea about the process of emergence and development of the history of science and technology as a scientific discipline in the USSR. The preparation and defending of dissertations, which includes postgraduate training (“aspirantura”) and the work of doctoral candidates (“soiskateli”), is one of the most important institutions for scientific disciplines. Thus, the paper analyzes the dynamics of the number of dissertations, their chronological scope and how it correlates with the time when the dissertations were written, and identifies the regions and themes, chosen as dissertation study subjects, as well as the institutes where the works on the history of technology were defended. The role of scientific schools and their leaders in the research conducted for dissertations is reviewed, particularly the schools of V. V. Danilevskii at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in the first half of the 1950s, I. Ya. Konfederatov at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, S. V. Shukhardin at the Institute for the History of Science and Technology of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the 1960s – 1970s, as well as A. N. Bogolyubov’s school at the Institute of Mathematics of the Ukrainian SSR’s Academy of Sciences. The trajectories of further professionalization and socialization of the recipients of scientific degrees in the field of the history of science have been traced.
