Abstract

This paper is devoted to the scientific activities of S. A. Vekshiskii, a prominent Soviet scientist in the field of cathode electronics and vacuum engineering and one of the founders of Russian electronic industry. Vekshiskii, who became fascinated with electrical engineering as a child, after his graduation from the gymnasium enrolled in the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute where attracted attention of A. I. Ioffe. Later on he worked at the Svetlana Plant and the creation of practically all types of the Soviet electronic devices during the pre-War period is associated with Vekshinskii’s name (receiving and amplifying tubes, generating tubes, cathode-ray and gasdischarge devices). Beginning with 1945, the Central Vacuum Laboratory and, later on, the Research Institute of Vacuum Technology, headed by Vekshinskii, participated in the Atomic Project and contributed to the creation of new instruments and devices necessary for the Soviet nuclear-missile shield. His work on the “closed” (classified) topics became the reason for the fact that the subsequent coverage of his scientific heritage in the literature was fragmentary and only nowadays Vekshiskii’s contribution to the development of science and technology in our country may be described comprehensively enough.
