Abstract

In the study of an important Phrygian centre Kelainai-Apamea literary sources play a major role due to the great amount of data on this city found in Classical authors. However, before comparing these testimonies with the data of other types of sources it is necessary to perform a detailed critical analysis of the literary tradition taking into account the fact that not all written sources are of  equal credibility. The works of mythological, poetical and paradoxographical genres require especially thorough analysis. In this article the author proposes a study of a series of topographical indications related to the city of Kelainai (the spring of Midas, Mount Berekyntos) which are preserved in the anonymous works De fluviis и Parallela Minora, ascribed to Plutarchus. The analysis of this evidence in a broader context of mythological traditions concerning king Midas on the one hand, and the Phrygian Mother of gods on the other shows that the testimonies of Pseudo-Plutarch should be regarded as being of purely literary character and cannot be used for the reconstruction of a realistic picture of the city’s topography, as it is frequently done by modern scholars. The author also makes a suggestion about the origin of Pseudo-Plutarch’s testimony and its relation to the local mythological tradition.
