Abstract

The article contains a publication of two letters from the correspondence between the leading Egyptologists of the first half of the twentieth century: the letter from Alan H. Gardiner to Vladimir Golenishchev of 29th July 1914 and the draft reply by Golenishchev of 30th July 1914. Both documents are kept in the Archive of Vladimir Golenishchev in Paris. The letters provide an insight into the mood of the outstanding European scholars on the verge of World War I, clarify some details of their biography in 1914, and throw new light on their research plans, and their contribution to the intellectual formation of the future leader of the Soviet ancient Near East scholarship, Vassily Struve.
