Abstract

This article is about the War of the Worlds radio show by the American The Mercury Theater on the Air, based on the eponymous novel by Herbert Wells, which was broadcast live on the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) October 30, 1938. The original work of G. Wells on the Martian invasion of Earth was adapted for radio by the playwright Howard Koch, who changed the place and time of action from England of the 19th century to the United St of the 30s of the 20th century. The program became known for causing a panic among listeners, who considered it a real report from the scene. Nowadays, the production is interpreted as one of the first projects of alternative reality.

В 1930-е годы радиосеть Колумбийской радиовещательной системы Си-би-эс каждое воскресенье в 20.00 часов по восточному времени США транслировала одночасовые литературные постановки [Houseman J. 1980: 390]. В воскресенье 30 октября 1938 г., на Хэллоуин, в прямом эфире Си-би-эс передавали «Войну миров» – радиопостановку американского театра у микрофона «Меркурий» (The Mercury Theatre on the Air) по одноимённому роману Герберта Дж. Уэллса, опубликованному в 1898 г. Трансляция «Войны миров» стала событием, получившим широчайшую известность из-за того, что многие радиослушатели посчитали её настоящим репортажем с места события. Оригинальный роман Г. Уэллса о марсианском вторжения на Землю был адаптирован для радио драматургом Говардом Кохом, изменившим лишь место и время действия с Англии XIX века на современные Соединённые Штаты, а точка приземления первого марсианского космического корабля была изменена на Гровер-милл, деревню в штате Нью-Джерси.
2 В наше время постановка интерпретируется как один из первых проектов альтернативной реальности, поскольку, за исключением вступления, была сыграна как реальное событие, предлагавшее аудитории принять радиоспектакль как форму действительности.

Радиоспектакль «Война миров» транслировался 30 октября 1938 г. в прямом эфире Си-би-эс. Режиссёр постановки придумал включить в неё «живые выпуски новостей», отчего спектакль, напоминавший репортажи с места событий, вызвал панику слушателей, поверивших в реальность вторжения марсиан.

Режиссёром постановки был тогда ещё малоизвестный Дж. Орсон Уэллс. Это в 2002 г. Британский институт кино назовёт его величайшим режиссёром всех времён, а исследование, основанное на мнениях критиков и постановщиков исторических ретроспектив, признает его лучшим режиссёром в истории кино. К тому времени он станет известным американским актёром, сценаристом, режиссёром, плодотворно работающим в театре, на радио и в кино. Его фильмам (наиболее примечательны картины «Гражданин Кейн», «Печать зла», «Процесс», «Леди из Шанхая») были присущи изобретательность в технических решениях. В 1946 г. О. Уэллс поставил на музыкальной сцене свою версию произведения Жюля Верна «Вокруг света за 80 дней», которую в 1956 г. экранизировал режиссёр Майкл Андерсон с Дэвидом Нивеном в главной роли.
5 А в 1930-х годах молодой О. Уэллс работал над созданием двух постановок для летнего театра «Меркурий» (The Mercury Summer Theatre) компании Си-би-эс, специализировавшего на создании радиоспектаклей по классическим литературным произведениям, и программы «Орсон Уэллс комментариз» (Orson Welles Commentaries) сети Эй-би-си (ABC), представлявшей политические комментарии событий в радиоэфире.
