Abstract

The African American spiritual is one of the most significant forms of American folklore which have made lasting contributions to global culture. It is considered to have laid the groundwork for the musical genres such as gospel, blues and jazz. African Americans are largely the descendants of slaves who were taken from their African homelands by force to work on plantations in the American South. Coming from hundreds of different tribes, mainly from Western Africa, they brought with them rich West African musical traditions. Away from their roots and torn out of their own cultural heritage, they sought solace in music. It helped them remain hopeful and resilient during the most difficult times. Music was a way for slaves to express their feelings: longing for freedom and home, joy, sorrow. Spirituals were created as a result of the coexistence of African and European cultures. They represented a unique combination of various elements of Puritan hymns, Anglo-Celtic ballads, African folklore and performance style. The author analyzes several songs associated with the Underground Railroad and argues that Black spirituals were regarded not only as expressions of religious faith, but also as a veiled form of resistance. The article presents some results which illustrate that some of the lyrics had a double meaning and coded messages. Spirituals were the means by which slaves could protest against slavery, transmit secret messages and encourage the fight for freedom. The article covers the main themes of spirituals and defines the key characteristics of their origin and history.

1 ВВЕДЕНИЕ
2 История развития афроамериканской музыки так же многогранна и сложна, как история самих афроамериканцев. Нельзя не отметить, что при кажущейся обширности исследований, посвященных роли музыкального искусства афроамериканцев в становлении американской культуры, еще многие вопросы требуют дополнительного рассмотрения. До сих пор было уделено относительно мало внимания многоаспектному характеру одной из самых известных форм американского фольклора, положившей основу таким музыкальным жанрам, как госпел, блюз и джаз и повлиявшей на мировую культуру в целом, а именно спиричуэлс (англ. Spiritual – духовный).
3 Спиричуэлс (англ. Negro spirituals, Spiritual music, African American spirituals) — это духовные песни афроамериканцев, возникшие в период рабства на Юге США (1619-1865) [Johnson J.W., Johnson, R.J., 2002:13-14]. Как писал выдающийся афроамериканский общественный деятель и историк У.Э.Б. Дюбуа, в этих «песнях печали», выражалась душа чернокожих американцев. «Музыка, ритмичная, всегда минорная, привезенная из дебрей Африки, изменившаяся, адаптировавшаяся к новой почве, напитавшаяся слезами и потом, стала самым впечатляющим излиянием Души негра, ее скорби, отчаяния и надежды…» [DuBois W. E. B., 1968].

Спиричуэлс обычно считаются религиозной музыкой, однако они носили гораздо более глубокий смысл для людей, которые их сочиняли. Возникшие в процессе взаимодействия европейской и африканской культур в условиях рабства, духовные песни представляют собой синтетический жанр. Основой текстов спиричуэлс служили библейские сюжеты, которые адаптировались невольниками к конкретным условиям их повседневной жизни. Песни сочетали в себе такие характерные элементы африканских исполнительских традиций, как эмоциональность, коллективная импровизация, первостепенная роль ритма и ярко выраженная полиритмия, которые гармонично сочетались со стилистикой пуританских гимнов, христианских псалмов и англо-кельтских баллад [Конен В. Д., 1965: 102].
6 Одним из первых исследований, посвященных изучению культуры и быта африканских рабов на юге США стал сборник «Песни рабов Соединенных Штатов» (Slave Songs of the United States). Эта первая коллекция афроамериканских спиричуэлс (136 песен), выпущенная в 1867 году филологом-аболиционистом У.Ф. Алленом с соавторами, до сих пор остается одним из важнейших источников знаний о музыкальной культуре афроамериканцев. Авторы сборника отмечали, что были впечатлены феноменальной музыкальностью рабов, их уникальным даром коллективной импровизации и одухотворенностью текстов. Книга продемонстрировала читателям, что в афроамериканском фольклоре нет ничего «варварского и экзотического» [Конен В. Д., 1965: 103].
