On Semantic Continuity: the Domain of ‘Pushing’ in Slavic Languages

The paper examines the semantic domain of ‘pushing’ on the material of 8 Slavic languages. We focus on the cases where the zone of caused motion intersects with adjacent fields. The analysis shows that lexical contiguity occurs at two levels. First, at a synchronic level: lexemes that refer to a caused motion event may also cover meanings from an adjacent zone. Second, in a diachronic perspective: as a result of historical changes, verbs may lose their source semantics, completely shifting to a contiguous field.
