Abstract

The purpose of this work is to study the functioning of the motif of the world mountain in the texts of Buryat versions of the Gesariada. In modern folklore studies, the research of local epic traditions is becoming more and more relevant, which allows us to identify patterns of development of the epic genre in the vast territory of settlement of related peoples. The gesariad, as a complex of epic texts, is spread throughout almost all of Central Asia and is a rich material for studying traditional culture, history and Ethnography. The subject of research is the motive of the mountains, the object – text variants of the Buryat Geseriada. The world mountain in Buryat mythology is a model of the universe and includes parameters of the cosmic device. In the vast majority of texts of the Buryat Gesariad, the motif of the world mountain is embodied in the motif of mount Sumeru. Also in the Buryat texts there are mountains that have proper Buryat names and implement the all-Mongol cult of worship of mountain spirits. Determining the functions of the spatial image and revealing its variability leads the author to the conclusion that this motif not only determines the typological proximity of the epic texts about Gesar, but also reveals the place of the concept of the mountain in the worldview of the Buryats.
