“In Memory of Our Ten-Year Friendly Relations, which have not been Marred by Anything... ”: the Unpublished Letters from Boris Sadovskoy to Alexander Block and Their Literary and Historical Context

Abstract

The article discusses the complete letters by B.A. Sadovskoy addressed to A.A. Blok, introducing these letters into scholarly circulation and supplying them with a detailed historical-and-literary comment. The letters are of great interest to literary researchers not only because they shed additional light on the relationship between the author and the addressee, but also because they are of topical literary and historical concern: they touch upon evaluations of N. Gumilev's works, upon characterization of any artistic individuality in the light of two Pushkinian types – of Mozart and Salieri, upon the atmosphere of the liberal Petrograd periodicals and the publishing plans for the anti-acmeistic “Galatea”; upon the monarchical ideal and the hopelessness of the artist's fate in the world destroyed by the Revolution. The article lists Blok`s works especially valued by Sadovskoy. Sadovskoy's concept of Blok's artistic path as the “trilogy of incarnation&8j1; is discussed here. The importance of the village motif in the creative exchanges between Sadovskoy and Blok is pointed out. It is noted that despite their many differences, both poets were brought up in the highly cultured urban circles, and thanks to their mutual appreciation of the rustic they grew to understand and accept each other. The article emphasizes the singularity of Sadovskoy's interpretation of the “Alexander Blok and the Silver Age&8j1; theme.
