Abstract

The authors consider, from the comparative perspective, the traditional motives integral to a wooing plotline, which has ancient origins and is indispensable to the epics of the Mongolian people. Exposure of common plot-forming motives is important for the study of the genesis and development of epic texts having roots in the same ethnic tradition. The structural and comparative methods are employed here to analyze the category of motif and plot in epic texts. As a result, the authors offer a list of traditional and recurrent (stable) plotlines and motives in the epics of the Mongolian people and describe the transformation of the motif’s semantics in different local traditions. Key motives with their invariants and variants, found in almost all epic renderings of marriage engagements, are defined. It has been concluded that the most ancient motives, having an established formulaic structure, have remained common for all Mongolian people. Some inserted and auxiliary motives, relating to the plotline of marriage engagement, are also identified.
