Abstract

The article analyzes and publishes for the first time the letters of N.S. Trubetskoy to Academician A.A. Shakhmatov related to Trubetskoy’s report on the problems of the rhythmic structure of Mordovian folk song poetry. Trubetskoy formulated in them his theoretical views on the Mordovian versification, the syllabic meter of which was borrowed from the Eastern Slavs in the most ancient times. He challenged, thus, the provisions of Academician F.E. Korsh, who considered the rhythm of Russian folk poetry to be originally quantitative and tonic. Trubetskoy, on the other hand, believed that the syllabic meter was characteristic of common Slavic folk poetry. His thoughts developed further in the works created already in exile. The modern science of versification is consistent with the provisions of Trubetskoy.
