Abstract

The article is devoted to a previously unpublished feuilleton by A.T. Averchenko about Bulgaria. The author reconstructs the situation in the country at the time of the writer's arrival, restores the details of the satirist's stay in the Bulgarian capital, which allows recreating the atmosphere unfriendly towards Russian refugees. The picture designed in the feuilleton is compared with the realities of Bulgaria, it is concluded that Averchenko followed stereotypes that had a basis, but were quite well-known in newspapers. The country appears in a negative light, hostile to Russian emigrants. At the same time, they were present in Averchenko's earlier work, and Russian travelers and emigrants who visited Bulgaria before and after him used a certain set of symbols when describing the country. At the end of the article, based on the preserved manuscript, the text of the feuilleton is published in Russian for the first time.
