Abstract

The paper analyses the practice of ordination of Orthodox deacons and priests from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by Simeon, the metropolitan of Smolensk. It emerged in harsh conditions of existence of the Orthodox Church in the Grand Duchy, when the Polish king didn’t let to ordain new Belorussian (Mogilev) bishop. In some years it caused the Orthodox priest shortage there. That’s why monks of the Polotsk Epiphany monastery asked the Russian government to permit Smolensk and Pskov metropolitans to ordinate priests and deacons coming from abroad. The decision was positive, and 68 people (registered cases) had been ordaining in Smolensk during 1685–1690. Such a support played an important role in the survival of the Orthodox church in Belorussia in one of the hardest periods of its history.
