Abstract

The inscriptions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries published in the article were collected de visu by the authors in the late 2017 at the courtyard and cells of St. Michael the Archangel Monastery in Jerusalem. Pilgrims’ inscriptions were placed at the walls, parapets and even floor pavements of the monastery. Most are elaborated and lavishly decorated stone carvings, others are simple graffiti, typical for pilgrims’ inscriptions. Presumably, the inscriptions were carved by professional carvers order, and only occasionally were incised by pilgrims themselves. The standard texts commemorate the pilgrimage to the Holy Places, contain the personal name and social rank of the pilgrims, as well as the date of their stay at the monastery.
