Abstract

Expectations that the coming into political life of the younger generation of millennials, those who are now 18 to 30 years old will significantly change the political life in the country and the distribution of political forces, have been confirmed: young people actively participated in the midterm election and this helped the Democrats to get a majority in the House of Representatives. The general vector of the mood of young people, manifested during the campaign - liberalization of views, manifested in the self-identification of young people - the relative majority consider themselves liberals, or close to the liberals. In addition, many express views which are essentially liberal and also close to socialist, in particular with regard to the role of the state in providing the population with work, medical care and higher education. More young people positively assess the concept of "socialism" than "capitalism". Most young people negatively evaluate President Trump’s policies and are not going to vote for him in the next presidential election of 2020. Most young people mistrust the president, the congress, the federal government, big business, Wall Street, the media and the immigration authorities. Confidence exceeds distrust only in the leadership of universities and the local police. Young people have a negative attitude towards Trump’s immigration policy and the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico to counteract illegal immigration. Against the backdrop of a growing number of firearms homicides, young people are in favor of revising the law that allows the sale of weapons; voting for congressional candidates often depended on their position on gun control.

1 Избирательная кампания 2018 года и результаты промежуточных выборов показали существенные сдвиги во взглядах молодых американцев, в основном, в либеральном направлении. Эти сдвиги характеризуются рядом черт общественного мнения молодёжи.
2 Прежде всего, молодёжь пришла на промежуточные выборы в максимальном количестве за последние три десятилетия: 31% молодёжи в возрасте 18–29 лет, по сравнению с 21% в 2014 году1, из которых 67% проголосовали за кандидатов-демократов, 32%, поддержали республиканцев. Эта разница в 35% помогла демократам получить большинство в Палате представителей; в 2016 г. разница между молодёжными голосами за Клинтон и Трампа составила 21%, а в 2014 г. за демократов и республиканцев на промежуточных выборах – 12%. 1. Причины роста молодёжной активности

 

Существует несколько причин этого сдвига и возможных последствий для развития политической ситуации в стране.
4 Уже с двухтысячных годов, растёт политизация молодёжи – интерес к политике и желание как-то повлиять на принятие органами власти важных решений. Тем не менее, социологические данные показывают, что молодёжь в возрасте 18–9 лет отстаёт по своей политической грамотности и политической активности от более старших поколений. В выборах традиционно участвовали около одной пятой молодёжи электорального возраста. За последние десять лет ситуация несколько изменялась – молодёжь голосует всё больше, но и общая политическая активность растёт. В результате, на этих выборах, по-прежнему, молодые избиратели составили 13% всех участвовавших в выборах, в то время как доля молодёжи среди общего числа избирателей составляет 21%, то есть молодёжь недостаточно представлена в политической жизни, и соответственно, в органах власти (хотя участие молодёжи в выборах возросло на 50% – с 21% в 2014 г. до 31% в 2018 г.).
5 Что толкнуло молодых людей принять участие в выборах в этот раз?
6 Прежде всего, представления, что положение дел в стране ухудшилось за последние годы, и молодёжь это испытала на себе, особенно небелая. Это фиксируется и в опросах общественного мнения (см. табл. 1).
