Abstract

This paper analyzes the causes and the nature of the restrictions related to the use of derivative particles and other function words. The author states that normalization of word usage is primarily targeted at its semantic or stylistic valency, i.e. its ability to collocate with other words. When it comes to derivative function words and secondary meanings of polysemous words, collocational compatibility is usually determined not by the dictionary meaning but by the usage tradition and a number of other factors, including the infl uence of the producing words. The compatibility restrictions are examined through the example of the derivative particles dostatochno [enough], dovol’no [quite] and the derivative prepositions: blagodarya [thanks to], vopreki [despite], nesmotrya na [in spite of].

The specifi c feature of their functioning is the foregrounding of the evaluative meaning component, which is not always perceived by the speaker and sometimes leads to semantic compatibility dissonance (e.g. dostatochno slaboe razvitie [weak enough development]). Not all derivatives equally retain the infl uence of their producing meanings and traditional usage. The extent of the infl uence depends on the “age” of the derivative meaning, which is evidenced by the dynamic nature of the lexical usus. The analysis of this feature of the derivative lexis has prompted the author to further determine the scope, the sources, the fi xation of lexical norms and the “memory of meaning” viewed as manifestation of a special interaction between language and speech. The practical goal of this study is to declare a need to account for the ‘memory of meaning’ in functional particles when investigating language norms or teaching these norms and building language competence in the fi eld of lexical compatibility.
