Abstract

The paper focuses on certain Russian motifs in the writing by Jean Paul within the context of his life story. The central subject are his relations with Baroness Juliane Krudener in the letters to whom he depicts Alexander I. In his later political writings of 1809—1810, Jean Paul elaborates the image of Alexander I along with the image of Russia seen as the «double» orthe «magnet» of Europe. Letters and fiction by Jean Paul demonstrate the change in his attitude towards the Russian Emperor whom in 1814 he viewed as «the god of light» who would bring about the cosmopolitan renovation of Europe. After the publication of A. S. Sturdza's note on the situation in Germany, which caused the adoption in 1819 of the Karlsbad Decisions on the tightening of control over the universities and the limitation of the freedom of the press, Jean Paul realized the futility of his hopes. He then wrote a parody on the Vienna Congress, La Sainte-Alliance and its main actors, presenting Alexander I as a charlatan mesmerist assisted by a «clairevoyante» Baroness Krudener, who had turned into a preacher of mystical Christianity and who played an important role in devising the idea of La Sainte-Alliance initiated by Alexander I.
