Abstract

The educated Russian society of the  19th century presented a vivid picture of bilingualism — quite often, Russian and  French were used  on equal terms. For  many, French was  almost the  first language. Therefore the  gross errors in the  French inscription on the  inkpot, given by Griboedov to his  wife, look weird. How to explain why the  most educated person, a diplomat who compiled documents in French, would be so negligent?
