Abstract

Investigations of psychological factors in migration attitudes are focused mainly on personality traits, while the role of moral values and norms remains understudied. The role of the binding moral foundations described in the framework of the moral foundations theory is of great interest. To test the hypothesis that binding moral foundations and social identity are related to migration attitudes, a questionnaire was developed that assesses attitudes towards external and internal migration. Analysis of the survey results of 1,020 people from 11 regions of Russia showed that binding moral foundations and different types of identity are related with migration attitudes. Binding moral foundations show stronger reverse correlations with attitudes towards migration when regional and national identities are high. Attachment to the national group and glorification of the national group mediate the link between binding moral foundations and migration attitudes.
