Abstract

The study of economic and psychological determinants of envy will help to clarify the role of the individual's attitude to money, economic attitudes in the manifestation of envy in its various forms. The study suggests that the ratio of economic and psychological characteristics of personality and envy has a dual orientation, describing the opposite direction of relations for different types of envy-situational and stable. The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation of economic and psychological characteristics of the individual and envy. The study involved 196 people (44% of men) aged 18 to 48 years (M = 28.6; SD = 8.5). To assess envy and economic and psychological characteristics of the individual, the method of diagnosing envy of the individual and the subject areas of envy (T. V. Beskova), “Monetary scale of beliefs and behavior” by A. Fernam (adapted by M. Yu.Semenov), the questionnaire of subjective economic well-being by V. A. Khashchenko, the questionnaire “Moral evaluation of money” by E. I. Gorbacheva and A. B. Kupreichenko were used. Contradictory relationships between envy and attitude to money were revealed: envious people have a positive attitude to money, attention to it, the ability to manage it, their perception as a symbol of independence and power, as well as anxiety, tension over money and a negative attitude to money. For the envious, an increased psychotherapeutic function of money was also revealed. The dual nature of envy is established, the forms of which are differently associated with economic and psychological characteristics. As a result of structural modeling, it is established that envy as a relatively stable education is an influencing variable, and object envy as a situational education is influenced by the characteristics of the attitude to money and the moral evaluation of money.
