12. . The Making and Remaking of Chinas Red Classics: Politics, Aesthetics and Mass Culture / ed. Li Li, R. Roberts. Hong Kong: HKU Press, 2017. Roberts and Lee mention in the Introduction that the term red classic first appeared in the early post-Maoist period and established itself in Chinese cultural discourse during the 1990s (p. Iix). However, they do not indicate the exact origin of the term. Nikolai Volland also notes the uncertainty of his genealogy: he is probably traced in marketing programs to promote a collection of several socialist novels published by the Peoples Literature or Huashan Wenyi in the mid-1990s (Volland, N. Socialist Cosmopolitanism: The Chinese Literary Universe, 1945-1965.New York: Columbia UP, 2017.S. 6). Wang Chunyan suggests another likely origin of the term: it may have been taken from the 1992 album Red Sun (Hong Taiyan), a collection of revolutionary songs based on modern disco-rhythms. 24. . One of the manifestations of attacks on intellectuals was a criticism of the theory of the average hero (Zhong-Xing Ren) by Shao Quanlin, reflecting the satiety with the image of ideal characters. Discussions about the depiction of the average hero and the deepening of realism (xianshizhui shenhua) of the early 1960s were the key moment of literary criticism of the new China. The folding of these discussions demonstrated the unwillingness of the official leadership to meet with literary figures, the partys fear of losing control of the cultural sphere (A. Nikitina, Evolution of the Personosphere ... P. 46).
