Ideology and Pragmatism in Establishing and Strengthening Sino-American Relations

The article presents an overview of the main stages of rapprochement between China and the United States and the establishment of relations between the two countries after long years of alienation and hostility. An attempt is made to analyze the relationship between pragmatic and ideological motivations in the process of this rapprochement, which ended in 1979 with the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China. The main reasons of the American-Chinese disagreements at the present stage are described. The prospects for the future development of relations between the two countries are briefly analyzed.
