Abstract

The article discusses four scenarios of state building in Ukraine and Russia: civic and ethnic models of nation-state, liberal and non-liberal empires. Secondary data – results of two mass surveys – inform the analysis. The proposed study highlights social particularities of supporters of each model. Special attention is paid to nationalism as a potential driving force of democratization in these two counties.
