Abstract

The article critically examines the main theoretical approaches developed in social sciences. It contemplates on the problem of the uneven socio-economic development of different societies. Three most influential theoretical and methodological approaches to the problem of uneven socio-economic development are singled out: institutional, structural, sociocultural. The advantages and limitations associated with the use of these approaches to the causes and mechanisms affecting the processes and dynamics of social and economic development are shown. The successful progress in further study of socio-economic development depends on the ability to create a conceptual approach which will explain the interrelations between institutional, structural and cultural parameters, on the one hand, and contingent variables, on the other.
