The Implementation of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk as a Problem of Modern Historiography

Abstract

During the past century, there emerged an extensive historiography of events related to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk 1918, but the political conjuncture has prevented the true historization of this sphere of issues. Despite close attention paid to a number of problems, there was no comprehensive analysis of the implementation of the Treaty of March 3rd, 1918, as well as other agreements related to it. The achievements of previous stages of historiography are often taken out of scholarly consideration without sufficient grounds. Consequent ongoing publication of different sources cannot in itself lead to a qualitative change in the historiographical situation, but creates the necessary conditions for it. That is why there is a great need in additional collections of documents about bilateral relations, but also in biographies of several key figures, as well as theoretical works on the systemic history of international relations following the First World War. So far, the problem of implementing the conditions of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and its transformation during the campaign of 1918 has not even been raised. Meanwhile, consideration of the implementation of the Treaty in the context of the development of a special Brest system of international relations will make it possible to avoid unjustifiable fixation on opportunistic topics and characters and will make it possible to find really critical gaps in international historiography. This is confirmed in the article by a number of specific examples and recommendations.
