Abstract

The paper explores the views and activity of the Vice President of the United States H.A. Wallace. He still causes controversial opinions of historians. Archival documents and new materials opened to researchers in the 1990’s allow to clarify the philosophy of one of the ideologists of the New Deal and the predicted successor of F.D. Roosevelt. Wallace policy analysis gives a better understanding of the entire postwar period of American history; in particular, find out the origins of cold war, the struggle of two currents in the political elite on the attitude towards the USSR, and also the causes of McCarthyism. During World War II Wallace visited the Soviet Union, after the war advocated for continued cooperation with him, atomic weapons control. He openly criticized the president H. Truman policy of a tough confrontation with his former ally. The Progressive Party, created with the active participation of Wallace, nominated him for presidential elections. Could the popular politician win in 1948? Sources discovered in our time exclude such a possibility. The decoding of the Soviet diplomatic correspondence on the project “Venona” revealed a wide espionage network operating in the United States since the 1930s, which largely influenced the emergence of the McCarthy era. The wave of anti-communism and the “witch hunt” that swept the whole country led not only to the defeat of Wallace in the elections, but also to his abandonment of the idea of cooperation with the Soviet regime, and then from his political career.
