Perestroika through the Eyes of an Employee of the International Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU

The memoirs of V. L. Musatov consider the dramatic events of 1985-1991, when the process of destruction of the Soviet statehood, weakening of the economy of the USSR and its military power developed under the influence of the failure of perestroika. These destructive phenomena could not but affect the position of the allies of the USSR, the socialist countries of Eastern Europe, which after 1945 were most closely associated with Moscow. The surrender of the foreign policy positions of the Soviet Union, along with internal transformations in the countries of Eastern Europe, led eventually to a change of the sociopolitical system in the former socialist states.
