Eco-Movement “Fridays for Future”: The First Results

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the new youth environmental movement “Fridays For Future”, which demonstrated significant success during the past year. The history of its formation is traced, and the factors due to which it managed to get rapid development for a very short time are considered. In particular, the reasons why its leader – Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg – was widely recognized in the world and was able to convey her demands to both the general public and a high-ranking political audience are analyzed. The article summarizes the data on the movement and its leader, published mainly in the media, since the phenomenon has not yet received a deep scientific study. On the basis of media materials, conclusions are drawn about the factors that affect the positive or negative assessment of the youth movement and its participants. The main reasons why the media demonstrate significant interest in this topic are listed. The reaction of “traditional” social activists, politicians and ordinary citizens to the “Fridays For Future” phenomenon is studied. Examples of condemnation and rejection, as well as individual attempts to flirt with this audience, the desire to take a new force into circulation, are tracked. The author analyzes the viewpoints of some observers who express suspicions about the artificiality of this project and selfish machinations of adults allegedly standing behind the participants of the movement. How fair these accusations can be, and how right are the apologists of the school movement as an honest children's initiative – this is a complex question that requires the study of a huge array of information. Possibilities of influence of school strikes on the real political agenda are also considered. Some examples of initiatives, particularly in Germany, proposed under the influence of eco-activists, are provided.

1 Протестное движение привлекательно для молодых поколений. В эпоху масс неоднократно менялись цели народных выступлений, новые идеи обретали популярность и сходили на нет. Но молодежь всегда принимала в уличных акциях активное участие. В последние годы протест существенно помолодел. В различного рода акциях, главной движущей силой которых ранее являлось студенчество и юные безработные (совершеннолетние, самостоятельные люди), теперь участвуют школьники.
2 Реакция “традиционных” общественных деятелей, политиков и рядовых граждан на этот феномен различна. Есть как примеры осуждения, так и попытки заигрывания с этой аудиторией, стремление взять новую силу “в оборот”. Отметим, что речь в данном случае идет не об официальных детских организациях, созданных взрослыми для юношества, но о явлении новом – объединениях, складывающихся стихийно, снизу, по инициативе самих представителей младшего поколения. Такое стало возможно в современном мире с доступными и простыми в использовании технологиями, со свободой общения в разной языковой среде, с изменившимся отношением к детям (признании их особых прав).
3 Рассмотрим один из ярчайших примеров такого рода движений – “Школьную забастовку за климат” (швед. Skolstrejk för klimatet, англ. Youth Strike for Climate), известное также под названием “Пятницы ради будущего” (швед. Fredagar för framtiden, англ. Fridays For Future, FFF). Начавшееся с инициативы одной шведской школьницы, оно в течение года охватило многие страны мира, в том числе ведущие; инициатор движения была принята на высоком уровне – в ООН и на Всемирном экономическом форуме в Давосе; ее действия удостоились внимания глав государств и высокопоставленных чиновников – не каждому взрослому деятелю или движению удавалось в сумме достичь таких результатов в столь короткие сроки.
4 Стремительный успех заставил усомниться в “честности игры” школьников, выступивших с “невинной” экологической повесткой. Возникли подозрения в искусственности этого проекта, в корыстных махинациях взрослых, якобы стоящих за участниками движения. Насколько справедливы могут быть данные обвинения и насколько правы апологеты школьного движения как честной детской инициативы – вопрос сложный, требующий изучения огромного массива информации.
5 В рамках данного исследования попытаемся разобраться в отдельных его составляющих. Проследив истоки и краткую историю движения, рассмотрим комментарии, которых оно удостоилось в СМИ. Обобщив имеющиеся факты, оценим явление в общих чертах, с целью понять, каково его влияние на политические процессы. Предварительно стоит отметить, что автор не ставит задачу глубинно исследовать вопрос о возможном “закулисье” данного общественного явления. В силу указанных ниже причин пока остановимся на его видимых составляющих.
