Abstract

The article deals with issues related to the evident crisis of the ideology of political correctness in reference to the media landscape of Western countries (including the mass media, public sphere and Internet). The author addresses the roots of the phenomenon, the history of its genesis in the Western world, analyzes its specifics and flaws in terms of the modern information society. The use of the politically correct language is discussed in connection with its socio-political impact. Special emphasis is placed on ambiguity and inconsistency of the phenomenon, which inevitably raise social and political controversy. On the one hand, there is a vivid contradiction between the freedom of speech as a key democratic principle and the requirements of political correctness that strictly limit this kind of freedom. On the other hand, the initially well-meaning practice against any kind of discrimination (as the political correctness was meant to be) easily turns into a doubletalk and manipulation technology (which is widely used in media and politics today). Such duality underlies the crisis of the ideology of political correctness coming into sharp focus exactly in the media field. This situation is potentially dangerous, is fraught with radicalization of society and eradication of democratic values. Despite the prevalence of political correctness in Western countries, there is also the inner ideological and political opposition to it (mostly represented by the right and far-right forces). The author comes to a conclusion there are only two possible ways out of this situation: either the ideology of political correctness outlives and transforms into something new, or the freedom of speech principle is wholly discredited hence ruining the core of democracy and giving way to a permanent controversy between politically charged media and independent public Internet as citizens’ tribune (which is customary for more authoritarian societies in the information era).

1 Понятие political correctness (политическая корректность, политкорректность) на сегодняшний день прочно закрепилось в западной политической культуре, откуда распространилось в большей или меньшей степени по всему миру. Среди исследователей нет единства мнений относительно точного времени и места его появления. Одни относят начало его использования к концу XVIII в. в США [1]. Другие считают, что идея была привезена в Соединенные Штаты из Западной Европы лишь в первой половине ХХ в. представителями Франкфуртской школы1. Энциклопедия Britannica указывает на возникновение термина в “марксистско-ленинском словаре” после социалистической революции 1917 г. в России [2]. Некоторые исследователи называют идеологию политкорректности “культурным марксизмом”, проводя прямые аналогии с классической идеологией марксизма [3]. В середине ХХ в. и позднее термин активно использовался социалистами и коммунистами разных стран, а впоследствии был подхвачен борцами за права меньшинств и дискриминируемых категорий населения (феминистками, национальными и сексуальными меньшинствами и др.) в США и Западной Европе. Так, в 1975 г. президент Национальной организации женщин США К. де Кроу заявила, что ее организация придерживается “интеллектуально и политически корректного (politically correct. – Прим. авт.) курса”, дабы не создавалось впечатление, что движение предназначено только для белых женщин среднего класса традиционной сексуальной ориентации [4]. С 70-х годов ХХ в. явление становилось все более популярным в повседневной жизни, средствах массовой информации, академической среде и к началу 90-х годов вошло в политическую практику стран Запада [5]. 1. Группа была создана в 1923 г. немецкими неомарксистами на базе Института социальных исследований при Университете Франкфурта-на-Майне, а в 1933 г. с приходом к власти в Германии национал-социалистов эмигрировала в США, где работала на базе Колумбийского университета Нью-Йорка. Видными представителями Франкфуртской школы являются Т. Адорно, М. Хоркхаймер, Г. Маркузе, Г. Фромм, Ю. Хабермас и др.
2 В современном общественном сознании западных государств политкорректность идет рука об руку с понятиями равенства и равноправия, гражданских прав и свобод, толерантности, мультикультурализма. В определенной степени это, вероятно, определяется историческим “комплексом вины”, связанным с истреблением коренного индейского населения в процессе завоевания американского континента и последующим использованием чернокожих в качестве рабов в США, а также с богатой колониальной историей великих европейских держав и трагическими событиями периода расцвета фашизма в Европе в первой половине ХХ в. Распространение феномена политкорректности на Западе, кроме того, прекрасно укладывается в рамки либерально-демократической идеологии как таковой, отвечая ее принципам уважения к правам и свободам индивида.
3 Однако единого определения “политической корректности” до сих пор не существует. Это одновременно языковой, культурный, философский, этический, социально-политический феномен, что и затрудняет выработку точного определения. По сути это – система новых критериев и нравственных стандартов в отношениях между людьми, социальными группами, организациями, общественными институтами, государствами и т. п. под знаком эгалитаризма.
